Where to Stay on Kauai
Kauai caters to all types of visitors. Some will come to be
pampered in the world-class resorts located in Princeville on the
north shore. Others want a more affordable vacation, but still
want a nice hotel situated near the beach. Others are looking
for at least a week-long stay and will opt for a condo with bedrooms
and a full kitchen. And lastly, some will visit Kauai on a
tight backpacker's budget looking for a hostel and hitch-hiking to
get around.
In addition to what type of accommodations you are looking for,
when picking a place to stay, think of what activities and
attractions you are interested in and make sure you are centrally
located near them. Since the main road in Kauai does not
completely circumnavigate the island, you will be doing a lot of
driving back and forth on the same stretch of road. For more
information read our Kauai
Transportation article. Some of the best hiking on the
island is located in Waimea Canyon and Koke'e State Park in the
western corner of the island. Some of the most popular beaches
and snorkeling spots are located on the northern corner, completely
on the other side of the island. Some people see their hotel
as simply a place with a bed after a long day of activities.
Others define their vacation by the quality of their hotel.
Princeville Resorts
When I first visited Kauai, I had heard of Princeville and actually
thought it was a full-fledged town. Instead, it is actually
just a large enclave of mega-resorts with all the amenities.

Hotels in Princeville. The hotels in Princeville are a
little isolated (purposefully). The closest dining
opportunities are right within the hotel premises themselves -
although in nearby Hanalei there are a few restaurants as well.
What is nice about Princeville is that it is adjacent some of the
best beaches (Hideaways Beach is our favorite) on the island.
The north shore Kauai beaches are probably
the most popular and staying in Princeville places you within
minutes of them.
Kapa'a, Kauai
The town of Kapa'a is located on the eastern shore is centrally
located to most attractions and that is where we like to stay on
Kauai. There are many hotels of various price and comfort
level here. Most of the hotels are located right on the coast
with easy access to the beach below. The town of Kapa'a offers
ample dining and shopping opportunities as well as easy access to
the larger town of Lihue (where the island's shopping mall and
Wal-Mart are located). Find the best deals on
Hotels in Kapa'a. Kapa'a is more centrally located, about
mid-way between the north shore beaches and Koke'e Drive with access
to Waimea Canyon and the back side of
the Na Pali Coast.
Lihue Town, Kauai
Lihue is the largest town on the island and is also where the
airport and sea port are located. Notice I used the word town
- that is because Lihue is a large town, but definitely should not
be confused with a city! Lihue is the island's commercial and
business center with the outdoor shopping mall, hospital (with 24/7
ER), stores and
restaurants.
Poipu, Kauai
The town of Poipu is located on the south shore of Kauai with
several pretty beaches nearby. There are numerous hotels and
vacation rental condos available here. You are closer to
Waimea Canyon and Na Pali, but further away from the north shore
beaches and snorkeling. Also, restaurants and shopping are
sparse in this town. There are quite a few vacation rental
condos available in Poipu. Find the best deals on
Hotels in Poipu.
Vacation Home Rentals
Condos or vacation home rentals are a great way to have all the
comforts of home and avoid the cramped hotel. Vacation rentals
can be economical too - especially if you have a large family; and
you can save money by cooking in the kitchen rather than eating out
for all your meals. Some Kauai vacation rentals are $100 or
less per night! When browsing vacation rentals, make sure you
see what extra charges are added on, for example a minimum stay
charge or a cleaning charge. Check out the latest prices on Kauai
Vacation Home Rentals.
